Anglo-Boer war sites

1Majuba Hill, KwaZulu-Natal

The first Anglo-Boer War ended in 1881 with a Boer victory at the Battle of Majuba Hill.

2Kimberley, Northern Cape

A number of battles in the second Anglo-Boer War were fought in the Kimberley area, while the town itself was held under siege for 124 days.

3Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal

This town is a gateway to a number of battle sites, not least of all the Battle of Spioenkop, which relieved the protracted siege of Ladysmith in the second Anglo-Boer War.

4Talana Museum, Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal

This excellent museum covers not only the Anglo-Boer Wars, but also the Anglo-Zulu Wars of the area.

5National Women’s Memorial and Anglo-Boer War Museum, Bloemfontein, Free State

Commemorates the 26 000 Boer women and children who died in the British concentration camps during the second Anglo-Boer War.

6Mafikeng, North West Province

Another town under siege in the second Anglo-Boer War, Mafikeng has a number of magnificent tales to tell.

7Battlefields Route, Mpumalanga

Has a Boer-War route with sites such as the Witbank colliery where Churchill hid after his escape from Pretoria; Lydenburg where the Battle of Long Tom Pass took place; and Belfast – the site of a concentration camp and cemetery.

8Melrose House, Pretoria

British commanders Lords Roberts and Kitchener both resided in this mansion during the second Anglo-Boer War. The Treaty of Vereeniging, which ended the war, was signed in the dining room.

9Horse Memorial, Port Elizabeth

The role of the horse in the second Anglo-Boer War is honoured at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.
